I have been practicing yoga for over ten years but had never heard of naked yoga until the recent media attention that linked naked yoga to the downfall of Kim Kardashian’s short lived marriage. That started a number of articles in the news including one about a woman who used to teach naked yoga classes in Toronto and found that women were more likely to attend than men, but the classes died out due to lack of interest. My curiosity was piqued so when I came across a link that was posted by a friend I naturally had a look.
In the video I watched, the two women practicing were cut and toned. They flowed seamlessly through their postures. It was truly beautiful. Although, there was a moment part way through the sequence when the women intertwined in a way that I have never seen in a regular yoga class. It made me pause for a moment and check to make sure it was a legitimate yoga site, which it appeared to be. I thought about forwarding the link to friends but I just couldn’t do it.
Now, the very mature me can see the beauty in naked yoga. It is an opportunity to connect with your body in its most basic state. Then there’s the other me, the less mature me. I giggle at the thought of doing a naked yoga class or of having a naked yoga teacher. Seriously, I don’t want to watch anything dangling down at me while I’m in a headstand or be bumped by the teacher’s bumps when they adjust my posture. And let’s face it, very few people look like those perfect bodies in the video.
As much as I adore the yogis who come to my classes, I don’t want to be at the front of class when a bunch of naked people bare all in Ananda Balasana (happy baby) or Utthita Hasta Padangustasana (extended hand to big toe). I think I’ll stick to fully clothed yoga.
If you want to check out naked yoga for yourself, there are sites that show some very beautiful (and legitimate) videos, but you’ll have to google it for yourself.
Hmmmm my fear wouldnt be the 'dangling'...Now the immature me is laughing!C
