Flexibility

I was talking to a friend last night and he said that he couldn’t go to yoga class because he wasn’t flexible enough. This is something I hear often. That feeling that in order to do yoga you have to be flexible...to be able to do the splits, to touch your toes to your nose, to do the postures perfectly. But the reality is that most people are not that flexible. Most people cannot do postures like the people on front of magazines or in ads for yoga studios. One of the reasons to come out to a yoga class is to become more flexible (and gain the benefits of focus and relaxation too!).
The wonderful thing about yoga is that there is benefit to your body every step along the way within a posture. It doesn’t matter what the person on the mat beside you is doing. What matters is where you are. You are beautiful exactly where you are and as you work at it and commit to your body the more flexible you will become. It may be slow, but it will happen.
One thing I know for certain is that we are all aging and if you think that you’re not flexible now, well, it’s not going to get better on its own! Ask yourself - who do you want to be wiping your butt when your 90? Yoga has the wonderful benefit of bringing wholeness to your body and that can happen whether you are fully in to a posture or just easing in to it.
Give it a try! Start out with where you are and see where you can go.
